About the position

Wirecutter is seeking a passionate NYC-based photographer/photo editor with 1-3 years of experience to assist in the daily creation, organization, and delivery of photography for our product reviews and related content. Photography is a significant part of Wirecutter guides, offering readers a clear and honest portrayal of the products we recommend. As the associate member of the photo team, this person will take on an array of tasks in a fast-moving environment.

The associate photo editor is responsible for attending to the daily needs of our editorial staff when it comes to preparing, researching, shooting, and editing photos. In this role you will handle multiple pieces of content simultaneously, coordinate with editors, and exercise strong editorial judgment in selecting art for a variety of written pieces. In addition, you will shoot a high volume of photos in our Long Island City studio on quick turnarounds. You will perform an integral aspect of our review process, which is providing readers with useful, clear, and high-quality visuals surrounding our product recommendations. This person will report to the Head of Photography & Video as part of the editorial department. Please include a cover letter and link to a portfolio of original photographs in your application.

Responsibilities

• Shoot photos in-studio and on location

• Intake, process, retouch and deliver photos

• Set up and operate studio lighting and related equipment

• Assist with prop and set styling

• Track multiple pieces of editorial content and adhere to deadlines

• Work with editors to research and select images for editorial content from our archive of original photography, stock agencies, manufacturers, and other third parties.

• Interface with other Wirecutter and NYT teams about photo usage and related projects

• Assist in daily studio upkeep and organization

• Assist in file management, organization, and backup

• Perform related work as assigned

Qualifications

• 1-3 years in an editorial or agency environment as part of a photography team or function

• A portfolio of original photographs 

• Strong knowledge of technical aspects of photography, including camera operation, studio lighting, prop styling and working with models.

• Strong knowledge of post-production processes, including editing, retouching, resizing, filing, and delivering assets.

• Advanced knowledge of the following software: Adobe Lightroom Classic, Adobe Photoshop, Dropbox, Google Docs. Knowledge of Airtable or other database software is a plus.

• Fluency with macOS operating system including comfort organizing large volumes of files, and performing regular data maintenance / organizational tasks.

• Extremely strong communication skills, including collaborative problem-solving, providing and receiving critical feedback, and clearly conveying progress, roadblocks, and questions to a team.

• Comfort working swiftly and independently under tight deadlines.

• Comfort working in a hybrid remote culture using tools such as Slack and Zoom (this position is not fully remote).

• Knowledge of the product review space or adjacent editorial landscape.

This role is eligible to occasionally work from home, in consultation with your manager.
