Education Week is looking for an experienced journalist dedicated to covering public education and the leaders who shape it daily. The successful applicant has a strong interest in reporting on school district leadership, is inquisitive and enterprising, and has a track record of high productivity and of quickly building a robust network of sources. The reporter must be able to juggle a mix of longer national trend pieces with daily stories, quick-turnaround pieces based on news developments, case studies of successful practice, and solutions-oriented coverage relevant to and useful for superintendents and other education leaders.

We want a creative thinker who welcomes the opportunity to shape special reports, newsletters, and other products aimed at the superintendent and education leader audience.

This reporter should understand how the pandemic has impacted America’s K-12 education system, and how volatile politics have increasingly centered on schools. Students are struggling, teachers are exhausted and demoralized, and principals are stressed out about hiring and retention, school safety, and student achievement and well-being.

School superintendents and other district leaders must address the challenges of all those key stakeholders while competently managing budgets, navigating school board politics, and making important decisions about curriculum and programming.

The successful candidate for this job will report deeply on school district leaders’ experiences, challenges, opportunities, and successes, and how they impact academic and social outcomes for K-12 students.

Responsibilities:

• Maintain a thorough understanding of assigned beat
• Pitch and deliver a mix of daily and longer-term enterprise work on your beat
• Write clear, authoritative articles that present complex information and issues fairly and completely
• Contribute to a weekly newsletter for district leaders
• Meet daily and longer-term deadlines consistently
• Collaborate regularly with visual journalists and digital news strategists to conceive and deliver a variety of compelling storytelling forms
• Develop a deep understanding of the Education Week audience through audience data analytics and focus groups
• Assist with and moderate live and virtual events for Education Week as assigned
• Adhere to Education Week and Associated Press style
• Contribute to production duties, such as proofreading, as assigned

Qualifications and Skills:

• 5 or more years as a reporter and a bachelor’s degree
• Knowledge of K-12 and education reporting experience preferred but not required
• Strong news judgment: ability to recognize news and conceptualize stories for Education Week and edweek.org audiences, which include superintendents, administrators, and policymakers
• High metabolism for story production
• Strong collaboration skills
• Ability and willingness to travel on occasion for on-site school reporting assignments
• Strong writing skills, including the ability to craft stories clearly, concisely, and accurately on daily deadlines
• Interest in shaping newsletters and other products aimed at edweek.org audiences
• Ability to juggle daily assignments with longer-term enterprise work
• Excellent communication skills
