Our politics are diverse, interesting and feature big issues and big personalities. We're home to Glenn Jacobs, the county executive better known as the professional wrestler Kane and a libertarian with his eyes on the Tennessee governor's mansion; U.S. Rep. Tim Burchett, the Carhartt coat clad Republican who has positioned himself as a bridge between House leadership and the Majorie Taylor Greene/Lauren Boebert wing of the party; noted no-Trumper Bob Corker, the former U.S. senator who hasn't sworn off a return to politics; former Gov. Bill Haslam, architect of Tennessee's economic revival, owner of the Nashville Predators and a Republican who could very well be a dark horse candidate for a future Republican presidential run; and state Rep. Gloria Johnson, one of the Tennessee Three lawmakers who was targeted for expulsion from the legislature after staging a demonstration for gun reform in the state capital.

Beyond politics, we’re home to Oak Ridge National Laboratory, America’s home of supercomputing and nuclear research and a key component of our national security efforts in cybersecurity, atomic weapons and energy; the Tennessee Valley Authority, the nation’s largest and most powerful quasi-public utility led by a CEO at the forefront of the drive to reestablish nuclear power as a key component of America’s carbon-free push; and the University of Tennessee, which serves as a fulcrum for the national research facilities in the region and is a leader in navigating the complex interplay of politics and free speech on college campuses.

All the dynamics of American politics play out here - Knoxville is a blue dot in a red sea - and we need a reporter who can connect local issues to a national audience and national issues to a local audience with urgency, expertise and distinction. Decisions are being made by fewer with less accountability and increasing influence over people's lives. The Trending Politics Reporter will fill the void by explain in plain terms what's happening and how people can have a say in public policy.

The Trending Politics Reporter will:

? Produce a daily Monday-Friday newsletter to build audience with the market's most engaging and urgent coverage, insights and analysis

? Create a need-to-read buzz that strengthens civic conversation and participation.

? Provide readers with a road map for how they can interact with and influence decision-makers at every level.

? Tap into trending moments when local politicians make national news.

? Use clear language to explain what's really happening.

? Hold our local and regional elected officials to account.

? Set up and break down happenings that occur on a cadence, including elections, with a focus on utility for readers.

All reporters in our newsroom work collaboratively, and we've got tremendous data, visuals, SEO and social media support for the person who will fill this role.
