We are seeking an experienced investigative reporter to join The Buffalo News watchdog team.

Our newsroom is focused on relentless enterprise – original reporting that you won’t find anywhere else. And the watchdog team is vital to that work. Our reporters uncover issues that take place behind the scenes of everyday life and trigger change when needed.

We’re looking for a passionate reporter who moves quickly to dig through public records, sift through data or knock on doors to get the story nobody else has. Candidates should be comfortable juggling quick-turn enterprise with stories that take weeks – or sometimes months – to develop.

Candidates should have clips that demonstrate perseverance and creativity in overcoming reporting obstacles; show an ability to cultivate sources and demonstrate reporting on a variety of topics.

Candidate’s stories should show the ability to:

• Use Freedom of Information laws to obtain government records
• Find and analyze data
• Expose systemic failures by government agencies or institutions
• Tell stories that are fair to the individuals or entities named in the stories
